Sustainability – It’s Everyone’s Responsibility

Wandsworth council is committed to making Wandsworth “a community of global citizens living within environmental limits in an attractive high quality local environment”.

And as part of this commitment, the Wandsworth Council Lifelong Learning team is dedicated to supporting this objective through implementing a programme of sustainability measures in the workplace. This includes paper-saving, recycling waste, energy reduction and replenishing office supplies with sustainable products.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability can be described as: “developing ways to fulfil the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations, while ensuring a balance between economic growth, environmental care and social well-being”.

Why is it Important?

Sustainability improves the quality of our lives, protects our ecosystem and preserves natural resources for future generations and there are four distinct areas: human, social, economic and environmental – known as the four pillars of sustainability.

How Can We Help?

Even the smallest of changes can make a huge difference and by incorporating adjustments into our daily routines we’ll all be doing our part to make the world a better place and meet the aims of the sustainability model.

Five Quick and Easy Ways to be more Sustainable:

  • Avoid single-use water bottles by drinking tap water
  • Take a reusable mug when out and about, instead of buying drinks in a cup that might not be recyclable
  • Cut down on the amount of paper you use by thinking about whether or not something needs to be printed
  • Use energy saving light bulbs
  • Turn off appliances at night that don’t need to be left on, such as your computer
